Bessent says up to 70 nations want to negotiate over Trump’s tariffs

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the U.S. tariff strategy Monday on “Kudlow,” following President Trump’s recent announcement of a 10% baseline tariff and “individualized reciprocal higher” tariffs on certain countries.

Bessent praised Trump’s leverage tactics, saying he “outlined the tariffs on April 2 and then gave countries several days to think about it.” He added that “50, 60, maybe almost 70 countries” have reached out to negotiate.

Trump also confirmed he spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba earlier in the day. Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer will lead talks with Japan, with Trump “going to be directly involved in those negotiations.” Japan is expected to be a priority due to its swift response and strong ties with the U.S.

Bessent defended using trade deficits and non-tariff barriers as metrics, noting “academic studies have shown that it’s the non-tariff trade barriers that are the real problem.”

Looking ahead, Bessent predicted a busy spring and told Kudlow, “It is my hope that through good negotiations, all we will do is see levels come down… the negotiations are going to be tough.”
