Chicago Serves Up Two of North America’s Best Restaurants

Chicago’s dining scene just scored another major win on the continental stage. Two local favorites—Smyth and Kasama—have been named among the 50 Best Restaurants in North America, a brand-new list unveiled during a splashy ceremony in Las Vegas.

At number four, Smyth continues to lead the city’s fine-dining scene. Run by chefs John and Karen Shields, the West Loop restaurant was also crowned Best Restaurant in the Midwest. Smyth’s creative tasting menus showcase Midwestern ingredients with the precision of modern art, earning it three Michelin stars—one of only two Chicago restaurants to hold that distinction, alongside Alinea.

Kasama, the Ukrainian Village gem from Genie Kwon and Timothy Flores, landed at number 31. Since opening in 2020, the Filipino-inspired spot has built a devoted following for its pastries by day and ambitious tasting menu by night. It made history as the first Filipino restaurant in the world to receive a Michelin star and has since picked up a James Beard Award—and even a cameo on FX’s The Bear.

The North America’s 50 Best Restaurants list comes from the team behind the long-running World’s 50 Best Restaurants, expanding its spotlight to include top dining destinations across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

New York City’s Atomix took the number one spot, adding another accolade to its James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality and its global ranking as the 12th best restaurant in the world.

Even without a global placement this year, Chicago’s showing is proof that the city’s chefs aren’t just keeping up with the continent’s best—they’re helping define what fine dining in North America looks like right now.
