WalletHub Names Chicago the Top Cold-Weather Getaway for Winter Travelers

Chicago is known for many things — from its steep living costs and recognizable local accent to its notoriously harsh winters.

But the cold season in the Windy City isn’t all bad news. In fact, a recent study from financial consulting firm WalletHub suggests Chicago may actually be one of the best places to visit when temperatures drop.

The company analyzed nearly 70 major U.S. metro areas — divided into “warm” and “cold” destinations — and ranked them based on affordability, travel convenience, and available activities.

Chicago claims the top spot

Among all the cold-weather metros, Chicago earned the No. 1 ranking, achieving an overall score of 66.39 out of 100. WalletHub described the city as an ideal choice for travelers looking to experience a quintessential winter wonderland, thanks to its variety of seasonal attractions and easy accessibility.

Flights to Chicago from major U.S. cities can often be found for around $205 or less, usually without the need for a connecting stop.

The report also highlighted Chicago’s wealth of things to do during the colder months — from scenic skating rinks to cozy spas and top-rated restaurants. According to WalletHub, the Chicago metro area ranks 10th in ice skating rinks per capita and features an impressive number of music venues, spas, and affordable eateries rated 4.5 stars or higher.
