The Alliance Française de Chicago marked Bastille Day 2026 with a two-day celebration that honored French culture, cuisine, and the enduring connection between France and the United States at its North Dearborn Street headquarters on July 11 and 12.

Held in advance of France’s official national holiday on July 14, the organization’s annual La Fête Nationale celebration brought together families, members, and guests for an afternoon fête and evening gathering celebrating all things French — from language and traditions to music, food, and the shared cultural ties that continue to connect France and America.

The 2026 celebration carried special significance as it recognized 250 years of Franco-American friendship, a relationship rooted in the founding era of the United States. The anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the longstanding connections between the two nations and the many ways French culture, ideas, and traditions have shaped American history.

The afternoon French Fête welcomed guests into the Alliance Française courtyard for a family-friendly celebration of French traditions. A strolling accordionist moved through the space, bringing the sounds of Parisian cafés to the gathering as guests participated in arts and crafts, cookie decorating, and activities inspired by French culture. The courtyard became a lively meeting place where guests of all ages experienced the warmth and hospitality associated with a traditional French fête.

As evening arrived, the historic Alliance Française building and courtyard took on a more elegant atmosphere. Illuminated courtyard lights highlighted the charm of the setting, creating a welcoming backdrop for an evening focused on French heritage, friendship, and celebration.

Inside, guests gathered at a dedicated rosé wine bar while enjoying an evening menu that showcased classic French flavors. Made-to-order crêpes, chocolate truffles, madeleines, fresh French bread, and selections of cheese and charcuterie offered a culinary journey through France’s celebrated gastronomic traditions.

Music was central to the evening, with a live DJ providing an international mix that complemented the festive atmosphere and brought guests together throughout the celebration.
