DOLTON — A modest house on 142nd Place is at the center of a growing debate, as Dolton officials move to purchase the childhood home of Pope Leo XIV.
The Village Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to acquire the property, with Mayor Jason House calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” that could bring in tourism and outside funding.
But not all residents are on board.
“We’re short on leadership, dealing with lawsuits, and streets need fixing,” said longtime resident Mary Avent. “Buying a house shouldn’t be our top priority.”
The home, once listed under $200,000, is now up for auction with a $250,000 reserve. A local roofing company donated materials and labor to replace the aging roof this week. The village plans to finalize the purchase within two weeks and hopes to declare the block a historic site.
While some see potential, others want city hall to focus on essentials before chasing symbolism.
